Extracting Solutions to Manage Risk in the Mining Industry

USI’s Mining Practice delivers industry leading solutions and services related to managing risk exposures for mining exploration and operations. Mining companies face many industry specific issues such as inherent safety concerns, operational liabilities and intense regulatory pressures from state and federal agencies. Occupational Disease (black lung) is a difficult exposure that limits market placement and unaddressed hazards such as subsidence, flooding and potential ground water contamination leave mining clients exposed to large claims.

At USI, we have in-depth expertise working directly with mining companies on risk management, legal, loss control, underwriting, environmental, construction, surety and mine reclamation. With an average of more than 25 years of experience, USI’s mining professionals understand the exposures of surface, underground, hard rock, soft rock and different types of minerals. We have deep relationships with global underwriters, dedicated claim adjusters and loss control engineering enabling us to place even the most difficult risks.

CASE STUDY:

As part of a new client review, USI conducted a collateral analysis and workers compensation review for a U.S. metallurgical coal mining company and subsidiary of a large steel manufacturer with liquidity concerns due to the market cycle. With our analysis, USI reduced the collateral held by various insurance companies providing $1.8MM in relief for the client. We also employed our loss control department to perform a track survey in one of their larger mines due to transportation safety concerns potentially saving lives and property.

CASE STUDY:

USI’s client operated an underground mine that had multiple mobile equipment units valued $75,000-$100,000. The insurance carrier included a $100,000 deductible for any loss due to roof falls claiming that a roof fall typically involves an entire working section of the mine and multiple pieces of equipment. USI’s mining team leveraged industry expertise to successfully explain to the carrier that isolated roof falls often involve single pieces of equipment and that the carrier’s special deductible unjustly left multiple assets uninsured. Based upon our negotiation, the underwriter agreed to remove the deductible in its entirety, potentially saving the client over $100,000 in loss exposure.
