Building a Sound Risk Management Program for Professional Services Firms

USI’s Professional Services / A&E Risk Management Practice provides structured solutions and services to address the insurance exposures of building and design firms, attorneys, accountants and other professional services organizations. Business challenges facing professional services firms such as market volatility, project staffing needs, employee errors, claims for failing to meet client expectations and shrinking budgets require specific expertise.

At USI, our long-range strategic planning helps clients evaluate these and other risk exposures, lower total cost of risk, enhance value and improve business profitability. We then use our carrier relationships, continuous study, and ongoing assessment of available markets—including several exclusive relationships in specific territories not available to other agents—to assist our professional services clients with identifying and selecting the best insurance program for their specific needs.

USI works with large national and regional firms and sole proprietors to offer customized coverages including:

  • Professional Liability
  • Directors & Officers Liability
  • Property & Casualty Insurance

USI also provides a full suite of analytical and risk management solutions for our professional services clients such as Claim Advocacy, Risk Control, Benchmarking (for structure and cost), Loss Forecasting and Contract Review.

CASE STUDY:

USI’s client, a national transportation engineering company in the Northwest, had been with their previous insurance broker for 15 years. The firm was very concerned about risk exposure after an earlier experience dealing with a fatality claim. Although the firm was not negligent the carrier had pressured them to pay the policy limits—scaring the company into purchasing higher limits for a significant premium increase to avoid future exposure. USI’s A&E Practice utilized our expansive benchmarking expertise to review a variety of engineering firms policy limits, deductibles and pricing to illustrate to the firm more appropriate limits and retention based on their needs. We then negotiated with the insurance marketplace for competitive pricing resulting in a $120,000 premium savings in the first policy year and more than $600,000 over the past five years.
